If you’re like me, I absolutely rely on consumer feedback about restaurants, contractors, hotels and even products. I will not book a hotel reservation unless I’ve reviewed the comments on TripAdvisor.com. Sites such as Yelp, Angie’s List, and even Google reviews, have become insanely popular because people rely on other’s experiences to make informed decisions. What I’ve noticed, however, in speaking with employees who participate in our leadership development programs, managers do not look to their colleagues for best practices or advice. Most managers admit to asking their boss or looking outside the organization for assistance. The largest untapped resource in organizations are peers. There is a wealth of knowledge and best practices that leaders within organizations can offer to each other. Your peers understand the organization just as much or maybe even better than you do. Additionally, they’ve likely experienced similar leadership challenges that you have within your organization. This is why, they can serve as a great resource for you. We encourage leaders to start leveraging their internal leadership peer group. This will in turn strengthen the collaboration, communication and productivity of the organization. It’s a win/win!
