We live in a world where change is constant. As technology evolves, so does the rate of change we experience. Similarly, the way organizations conducted business six months ago, may operate very differently now. If businesses want to remain relevant in the coming years, having a commitment to lead and embrace change is necessary. The idea of embracing and leading change may seem obvious to many organizational leaders, but the reality is that many organizations are unsure how to lead change. In an article written by Boris Ewenstein, Wesley Smith, and Ashvin Sologar for McKinsey & Company (2015), it’s estimated that 70% of business fail to reach their goals due to employee resistance and leadership challenges. So, how do we lead and transform the business while ensuring we have everyone onboard?
As one of the most popular adages goes, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail”. Unfortunately, many leaders approach change in a similar manner – unplanned. Approaching change in this manner can be detrimental to the business. As you can imagine the thought of change raises immediate flags throughout the organization. Concerns ranging from job security to how business will be conducted in the future are among some of the real concerns employees will have as your business undergoes change. If left unaddressed, these concerns will become the reality to your change initiative efforts and will slow (or prohibit) your overall goals. In addition to concerns from your frontline employees, you may have managers who are not skilled in leading change within their team / department. Let’s face it, for the business to be successful in its change efforts, there must be an intentional effort to have every employee onboard and the only way we can ensure that we are successful with this goal is to have a proper plan in place that will address these challenges.
Collaborating with a skilled Change Management Consultant will aid you when it comes to leading your change initiatives. Creating a plan that includes key focus in areas such as: Change Readiness, Strategic Alignment, Targeted Communication and Employee Preparation will provide an excellent foundation as you drive and lead change in your organization. Remember, change is inevitable; our response and actions to change is what can and should be managed.
