What we see happening in our organizations, school, governments and so forth is nothing new. It’s been happening for years. But we have something today that, while available in limited capacity years ago, is a game changer that can be used to level the field of opportunities. We have the ability and responsibility to use our collective power. Keeping diversity initiatives at the center of our organizations, school systems, and governments combined with our individual power of influence ensures that we don’t stall out, or worse, go backwards. It’s time that you recognize the power of your power and work to create change. Our power divided is useless, our power combined is a force to be reckoned with. The question that remains unanswered is, your willingness to use your power.
Using Your Power to Influence and Create Change – May 2023
What comes to mind when you hear the word power? Do you think of the president? Or, perhaps you think of a police officer or judge. For some, you may think of a higher spiritual being. These are some of the words or positions that come to mind when people think of the word power. Very seldom will people associate the word power with themselves, but, in a world that is plagued with so many obstacles and challenges, the power you possess may be what’s needed to overcome someone’s barrier.
Power, regardless of race or ethnicity, is something we all have. However, all power is not equally distributed and available for impactful and meaningful change. Systemic oppression and constant shifting of the status quo leaves many of us power deprived. Our efforts to move us forward are quickly met with a hidden agenda that communicates we are allies as long as we stay in our lane and don’t make any sudden moves. For example, think of the women who are good enough to do most things in organizations, but is underrepresented when we look at C-suite positions. They are commended for their innovative ideas, diversity in thought, and their “leadership”, but they fall short in their ability to lead an organization. For the few that see their efforts, they need more than your allyship, they need you to break down the walls by using your power to influence and demand change.
