As we bring to a close 2019, there’s no better time then now to stop and take inventory of the many accomplishments, challenges, and failures you experienced as a leader this year. Unfortunately, as leaders, we become so consumed with our day to day objectives, we neglect to reflect on what we achieved (or did not achieve) along the way. How can knowing this make you a more effective leader?
I think most will agree that whether you succeed or fail, there is most definitely a lesson that can be learned. However, in order for you to learn that lesson, you must take time to stop and reflect along the way. In order to gain the most from your reflection activity, you may want to engage with a peer to discuss your wins or failures, ask your subordinates to discuss how effective you were in supporting them and how you could do better in the future, or speak with your direct manager. The main point here is to proactively take time to reflect and solicit others who can provide valuable unfiltered feedback.
Once you obtain this priceless information, you can begin the process of creating a plan that will develop you into a more effective leader. Remember, in everything you do good, bad, or indifferent, there’s a lesson that can be learned and used as a springboard to becoming a more effective leader. What lessons have you learned this year? What successes and setbacks have you experienced? What was the cause and how could you have executed it differently? How will knowing this information benefit you in the new year?
