It’s official. We’ve made it to the halfway point of 2020. I think we can all agree that this year started off rather rough for many of us. But as the saying goes, “what doesn’t break us only makes us stronger”. And being strong, as a collective team, is what we’ll need to finish off this year.
As leaders, our role has never been as important and complex as it is today. We are truly living through unprecedented times. And, supporting your team is critical if you plan on achieving those 2020 goals. Unfortunately, a recent survey completed by Gallup, shows that 20% percent of employees feel like they’re not prepared and/or aligned with the organizational goals. This is an alarming number that can (and will) negatively impact you and your team. Now is the time to reassess and reconnect to your team.
An area that is often overlooked, especially in the time of crisis, is what is the goal of the business in the midst of the crisis and how, as a department, are we going to support that goal. Being able to speak to that goal is key in helping to reengage your team and align them back to the vision. Another opportunity, that is equally overlooked by leaders, is the emotional state of your employees. Many employees are reporting that they feel their organizations are less concerned about their well being. Unfortunately, these (and other) current events have left employees feeling emotionally drained and burned out. Left unchecked, aspirations of achieving your goals for 2020 are as good as gone.
As you continue to look forward, ask yourself how can you better support your team during this time? It may be as simple as having more touch points throughout the week or it could be more complex which may lead to the reassignment of work and projects. Whatever it may be, it’s important that your team understand the goals and they feel supported through these times.
